Here is how it all went by:
Once upon a time in Jakarta, in the mid sixties three Scandinavians, a Dane, a Norwegian and a Swede sat together, trying to solve the world's problems - over a couple of drinks -. They couldn’t agree as to how. After hour long arguing one of them suggested: let's play soccer instead!
The first match was organised in a tea plantation near Puncak in 1965. The entire Scandinavian community participated and the outing was more like a huge family picnic. The success was repeated the next couple of years, until someone got the bright idea to change the soccer matches into golf tournaments. That was when SCANINDO was born back in 1968!
Some simple rules were agreed upon. The most important was that current year's winner, was the next year's organizer. Another tradition is that each player will bring a prize to ensure that all players win a prize.
When the founders and other Scandinavian expats went homewards they couldn’t let go of the memories and founded the ScanIndo Scandinavia yearly event which was played the first time in 1988.
Tournaments are alternating between Denmark and Sweden on courses situated within a circle of approx. 100 km from Helsingborg. Participants are Indonesians living in the Nordic countries and previous residents of the Nordic community in Indonesia or members who are still stationed there and are home on holiday. Other rules applicable are the same as for ScanIndo Indonesia. In 2008 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of ScanIndo Tournament in Scandinavia.
In the past ScanIndo and the Vikings golf was two separate events. ScanIndo was and is a yearly event with its own rules (once in Jakarta and once in Scandinavia), while the Vikings Golf Club tournament became a monthly event.
When the interest for golf grew for The Vikings Golf Club, it made sense also to have a trophy. The trophy was donated by Inge (family name not known), working for Volvo. So it was 1974 being the year with the first winner's name on the trophy! Today we have many trophies and fun events with great networking, where Scandinavian sponsor companies do a very valuable part of making our monthly events a success
In the old days Golfing was not that expensive and courses were scares. Today Jakarta offers some of the best golf courses in the world and many of them at both reasonable prices and some not depending if you’re a weekend golfer only or both
We don’t have all memories of Chairman’s deeds who should be thanked, as some people have lost contact with us. But with this new website we are going to make sure that that never happens again. Thanks to all we have been able to capture in making The Vikings Golf Club and ScanIndo a living marble
